Between 2011 and 2020, 1, 451 Australians died from lung diseases caused by exposure to dust. 80% of deaths was pneumoconiosis from exposure to asbestos and other mineral fibres*.

Section 19 of the Work Health and Safety Act addresses risks of exposure by requiring employers to monitor (as far as reasonably practicable) workplace conditions for airborne contaminants. People who breathe in airborne contaminates at work may be at risk of adverse health effects, including developing and occupational lung disease.

Dustlight from Creative Safety Initiatives is a compact, hand-held dust monitor engineered for real-time air quality measurement data on airborne particles, including PM1, PM2.5 and PM10. It allows workers to quickly assess their work environment and take immediate action to protect their health from dust exposure risks.

The Dustlight is intended for indicative measurements and can help determine when further gravimetric testing (by an Occupational Hygienist) is unnecessary, potentially saving time and costs. It is a tool to support health and safety in the workplace but should NOT be solely relied upon for compliance with regulated work exposure limits or be used as the sole basis for deciding on safety measures.
